PMI application help

Create your pmi.org account

Register at pmi.org with the name that appears on the government-issued photo ID you will show at the test center or online check-in. Per PMI, the name on your application must match your ID exactly, so avoid nicknames and check spelling. Membership is optional; per PMI, members pay a lower exam fee, so compare the membership fee plus member exam price against the non-member price before you decide.

Choose the certification and confirm eligibility

Open the application for the certification you intend to take and read its eligibility requirements in PMI's handbook. Each certification sets its own combination of education, experience and training hours. Per PMI, experience must fall within a set number of recent years and must be non-overlapping, meaning months spent on two projects at once count only once. Use our eligibility checker to test your profile, then confirm on pmi.org.

Document your experience in PMI's format

For each project, program or portfolio you list, PMI asks for the organization, your role, start and end dates, and a short description. Per PMI, the description should summarize the objective, your responsibilities and the outcome in a few hundred words, written in the first person and using project management language rather than job-title language. Keep a copy of every entry, and list a reference contact who can confirm your role if PMI asks.

Record your education and training hours

Enter your highest completed academic degree, then your project management education. Per PMI, PMP® applicants need 35 contact hours of project management education, and CAPM® applicants need 23; other certifications have their own requirements, so check each handbook. Training completed with P.U.L.L. provides a certificate showing the hours and course title, and for PMP, the training is delivered under our PMI Authorized Training Partner license.

Review and submit the application

Read every entry once more before submitting, checking dates, totals and spelling. Per PMI, you can save a draft and return later, but once the application is opened you have a limited window to complete it. After submission PMI reviews the application for completeness; per PMI this review takes up to five business days. You receive an email when it is approved or if PMI needs more information.

Be prepared for an audit

Per PMI, a portion of applications is selected at random for audit after submission. If selected, you are asked to provide copies of your degree or diploma, your training certificates, and signed experience verification forms from the people you listed as references. Per PMI you have 90 days to return the materials. Audits are routine, not accusations; organized records make them straightforward. P.U.L.L. provides the training documents PMI requires for our courses.

Pay PMI's exam fee

Once approved, pay the exam fee to PMI through your pmi.org account. The fee is set and collected by PMI, is separate from any training fee, and is not refundable by P.U.L.L. Per PMI, your one-year eligibility period starts when your application is approved (or when an audit is completed successfully), not when you pay; you may take the exam up to three times within that year, and re-examination fees apply. Check the current fee and attempt rules on pmi.org.

Schedule your exam with Pearson VUE

After payment, schedule through the Pearson VUE link in your PMI account. Per PMI you can choose a test center or an online proctored exam at home, and both deliver the same exam. Book early, because popular dates fill. For an online exam, run the system test on the computer you will use and prepare a quiet, clear room. Read PMI's rules on ID, rescheduling deadlines and permitted items so there are no surprises on exam day.

What P.U.L.L.'s application support includes

We review your eligibility before you enroll, show you how to structure each experience description, check your drafts for language that PMI flags, confirm your education and training entries, and guide you through an audit if one is triggered. We also help you choose a realistic exam date in line with your study roadmap and simulator results. The application itself is always submitted by you, through your own pmi.org account.

Per PMI. Application steps, fees and audit rules are set by PMI and change over time; verify on pmi.org before you submit. Official sources: PMP certification page · PMI certification process · Maintaining your certification.

What this guide covers

Applying for a PMI certification is a separate process from training. You apply directly to PMI on pmi.org, PMI reviews and approves your application, you pay PMI's exam fee, and you then schedule the exam. This guide walks through each step in order. The specifics below are per PMI at the time of writing; PMI updates its handbooks from time to time, so verify the current rules in the certification handbook on pmi.org before you submit.

Learners in a P.U.L.L. program receive hands-on support at every step described here. If you have a question about your own situation, email pull@pullacademy.com.
